Past Present Future is a series of interviews by Gianpiero Venturini from Itinerant Office. Kees Kaan, co-founder of Kaan Architecten, is the sixth of the architects to be interviewed.

“Past, Present, Future: About being an architect yesterday, today and beyond” is a series of video interviews conducted by Itinerant Office. Eleven internationally renowned architects have been asked to talk about their own past, present and future, exploring the figure of the architect and his or her role in contemporary society.

Past

“At the beginning, we got the ability to make small projects, little buildings of two, three hundred square meters. One of those projects became a nominee for the Palladio award, the year that David Chipperfield won it. But through that, we got in touch with a Spanish editing house. For the introduction to a booklet we got an interview curated by Carlos Ferrater. He put questions in front of us that made us aware of our thinking and our way of working. These kind of moments, such as the first interview, force you to reflect and make you aware of what you actually are doing intuitively.”

Present

“Because of the crisis there’s all kind of new ways of financing, but there’s also still the old way. There’s still a lot of money, and there’s still big projects, bankers, investors, companies, and they want to find a safe place to invest their money in real estate that has to be designed.”
