Designed by Lifethings in Seoul, Go-Gae Jip comprises different sections and uses and is horizontally divided in four volumes that shift creating balconies, covered areas and a terrace.
Go-Gae Jip is a mixed use building designed by Lifethings in Seoul, Korea. The house comprises two sections. First and second floor are the living space for the six family members, the third floor is a small cultural space, which will house a Korean cooking class for foreign visitors.
The building is horizontally divided into four volumes. The second floor shifts towards southern light, and the the third floor shifts towards the view of the Hyung-jae peak. The shifts of masses create a balcony on the third floor and a covered area in the garden.
At the heart of the living space is a large void space. The void creates opportunities for the two people and the four animals to be aware of each other’s presence at all times. Large window on the first floor connects the living room and the garden with no border to extend the dogs’ living area. The two large sliding doors help flexibly define the areas of occupation for the dogs and the cats, sometimes completely blocking off the staircase.
The cultural space on the third floor is a modern interpretation of Hanok. The traditional language of Yongmaru (ridge) and Seokarae (rafter) structure is realized with CNC fabricated Glulam allowing a much longer span while keeping the on-site install time to just a day and a half.
