On December 15 Oscar Niemeyer will be 100 years old. On December 15 Oscar Niemeyer will be 100 years old. A recent television interview transmitted by RAI showed him still active in his studio in Rio de Janeiro with the spectacular view of the beach at Copacabana.

He talked about his work and life, 20 years of which were spent away from his home country due to military dictatorship, after which between 1957 and 1962 he took part in the construction of the new capital Brasilia.

During his exile in Paris, Niemeyer produced over 500 designs, going on to build glorious examples of his unique capacity to blend modernist architecture and Brazilian tradition in concrete, all over the world. An exhibition, running until January 17 at the ETH in Zurich, celebrates his centenary with recent photographs of his buildings by Leonardo Finotti and portraits by Evandro Teixeira. Silvia Monaco
