House of Rohl

The bathroom as a work of art

Victoria + Albert, a House of Rohl brand, invited British sculptor Sophie-Elizabeth Thompson to create a collection of bathtubs and washbasins inspired by natural flows.

In the contemporary bathroom, every element stops being serviceable and becomes part of a new vision, which sees this space as the temple of well-being, privacy and self-care. Also contributing to this perspective are washbasins and bathtubs with a refined design, a strong identity and a powerful sculptural effect.

Among the companies that best represent this attitude are Victoria + Albert, a House of Rohl brand that has built up an international reputation for its freestanding bathtubs over more than three decades.

Its new collection, Seros, is an industry first: both the creative process and production were unlike any other series. Victoria + Albert commissioned a sculptor to create dynamic, fluid forms that would inspire a collection of bathtubs and washbasins. These beautiful and intriguing sculptures provided the perfect platform for Victoria + Albert's in-house design team.

The person selected to create these sculptural elements is Sophie-Elizabeth Thompson, a British artist based in Barcelona. Thompson works with granite, marble, bronze, ceramic, resin and plaster, and her works are exhibited worldwide in galleries and public spaces. His sculptural forms have a natural flow, which feels both dynamic and restful. The artist tells us how the inspiration for the collection came about:

"I live by the sea, I went down to the beach and took some photos. I observed the sea, the way it lays on the sand, subjected to the incessant action of the wind, and the way it moulds it, creating magnificent calm and fluid footprints, while the water continues to flow very gently. And it is that feeling of movement and that sense of... well, I mean, there is no effort behind it, it is simply a natural trace left on the sand, and for me that has been my greatest inspiration."

The result of this process is unique. The basin is asymmetrical and looks different from every angle and in every light. The collection includes a countertop basin and a pedestal basin - the first time Victoria + Albert has produced one. The pedestal washbasin for wall or centre mounting is made in one piece using Victoria + Albert's exclusive and patented material, QuarrycastTM.
