The bio-friendly wood from Val di Fiemme, Italy

Fiemme Tremila, a company specialising in biocompatible wood flooring, cladding and furniture, celebrates its first 30 years in 2023.

Val di Fiemme is an immense green lung, with one of the largest expanses of forest in the Alps: about 60 million trees per 20,000 inhabitants, 3,000 trees per capita. Fiemme Tremila, a company specializing in biocompatible wood flooring, cladding and furnishings, takes its name from this figure as it celebrates its first 30 years in 2023. The company's approach-its ecological attitude, its choice of excellent woods, and the creation of products that combine aesthetics and durability-has ancient roots and stems from the common sense of the geographical and human context in which it was born: Val di Fiemme, precisely.

From its responsibility to the territory and its inhabitants, the Magnificent Community of Fiemme, a centuries-old institution that still guards the valley's natural heritage, was officially born in 1111. Its representatives, elected democratically by the heads of families as spokesmen for all the inhabitants, protect and manage the common good: pastures, mountain pastures and, of course, forests. It is up to the Magnificent Community to regulate and monitor felling and regrowth in a sustainable rotation. Thanks to the Magnifica and the close contact with nature, the sense of community is rooted in Val di Fiemme; a 'happy' territory and not coincidentally fertile with virtuous enterprises that, although operating in different sectors, share a common concern for the well-being of people, society and the environment.

"In Val di Fiemme we grow up surrounded by the embrace of the forest. To these millions of trees-which sometimes, in the silence of the forest, we seem to hear all breathing together-we owe the quality of our lives. It is a silent company, but its call is vibrant," Marco Felicetti, CEO of Fiemme Tremila, tells us.

A concrete example of Fiemme Tremila's responsibility towards the environment is the fact that the company uses only certified woods. On the one hand, the territorial resources protected by the Magnificent Community of Fiemme, on the other hand, imported ones guaranteed by PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) and FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council), coming from forests cultivated with responsible silviculture practices and management plans for the purpose of proper preservation of the world's forest heritage. Fiemme Tremila planks all feature a structure in Triplostrato® derived from the crossing of three layers of solid wood: the first, the 4 mm noble lamella, is of the wood species chosen for the floor, the other two, the central core and the back, are made of spruce, a stable and elastic wood that also satisfies the desire to use the main resource available on the territory.

For the wood finish, the company came up with the BioPlus® treatment, which allows the material to remain alive and free to breathe and also ensures excellent resistance to wear and tear and simple, effective maintenance. The application of this special natural oil composed of more than 50 plant and mineral substances (the same substances the tree feeds on in life) takes 24 hours and six processing steps, unlike other treatments that are completed in less than ten minutes. Precious slowness. Indeed, it is again thanks to BioPlus® that Fiemme Tremila's biocompatible woods 'do good' and, as certified in 2017 by CNR-IVaLSA, are able to improve indoor air quality.

Among the many interior projects developed in these decades by Fiemme Tremila, we find several in the residential sector, such as some interiors for the Bosco Verticale and City Life in Milan. But there is no shortage of large contract projects, including the Technogym Village in Cesena (Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel ACPV), the Diesel Headquarters in Vicenza (Creative team Diesel), Hotel Indigo in London (Studio Michaelis Boyd), Banca Intesa Sanpaolo in Milan (studio aMDL), the spa at ADLER Lodge Ritten and the expansion of the ADLER Spa Resort THERMAE in Bagno Vignoni (arch. Hugo Demetz).
