Ottomano: the luminous handrail brings character to the staircase

Michele Marcon designed an original luminous aluminium handrail for OLEV, which won an honourable mention at the European Product Design Award in 2020.

How can we create lighting that gives the staircase a unique character that stands out from ordinary, predictable solutions? The dialogue between light and these distribution (but not only) spaces is by no means simple: it is necessary to avoid glare, to ensure that the ramp is functional and safe to walk on and, at the same time, to make it pleasant and welcoming. OLEV, a recognised Italian brand of designer lamps and luminaires with LED technology, has presented an original and scenic product, which innovates traditional solutions such as wall lights or step markers: Ottomano, a luminous aluminium handrail, designed by Italian designer Michele Marcon and awarded an honourable mention at the European Product Design Award in 2020.

As its name suggests, Ottomano is characterised by its ergonomic eight-sided shape. The product is installed directly on the wall, like any handrail, thus combining the traditional function of support and lighting. Michele Marcon has designed a particular section, which allows the inclusion of a double light source: in the lower part of Ottomano there is the light source that illuminates the steps, making them safe to walk on; towards the inside of the handrail there is a second LED strip in the direction of the wall, designed to illuminate the entire stairwell, avoiding glare. The refined finishes further enrich the product: on its sloping surfaces we find a subtle and elegant knurling, which makes Ottomano unique; the surface has a burnished and matt shade, pleasant to the touch, thanks to the application of anodising processes. On request, the handrail can also be painted to meet the aesthetic requirements of the designer. Each product is custom-made, adapting the length to the project specifications.
