The lights of the city travelling underground

Performance iN Lighting products illuminate the interiors of the Seligerskaya subway station in the northern suburbs of Moscow.

Experiments on the architectural typology of underground stations have a more than secular history. From London to Washington, from Naples to Doha, modern and contemporary architects in these spaces combine formal expressiveness and technical innovations to create authentic underground masterpieces. Moscow's new metro Line no. 10 is a fundamental infrastructure for the city. It is a link that crosses the vast urban territory of the capital from north to south, which the inhabitants of the northern suburbs have been waiting for for many years. The latest of the 23 stops on the line, which stretches over 33 kilometres, is the underground station Seligerskaja, located in the Beskudinkovskij district. The underground environment – frequented by thousands of people every day – has not been conceived as a simple passageway, but as a place to be experienced and of great architectural quality.

A fundamental factor for the use of spaces and the safety of citizens is the lighting design of the station. The technicians and architects have chosen Performance iN Lighting as their partner: a company with forty years' experience, capable of combining aesthetics and reliability, performance and design. For the general indirect lighting of the entire project, professional spotlights of the SQUARE+ 2 series were used, provided with a vandal-proof structure for security reasons. The light emitted upwards illuminates and enhances the large central vault in the waiting areas and ensures correct and glare-free indirect lighting for travellers. For accesses from outside, INSERT+ 2 recessed wall luminaires were chosen, illuminating the steps of the stairs and allowing safe transit.
