Aesthetics of Crossing: Land Ports of Entry / Citizenship by Design

Van Allen Institute, New York, recently inaugurated "Aesthetics of Crossing: Land Ports of Entry / Citizenship by Design", exhibition - open until July 31st - focusing on border crossing points and the individuals who pass through them, joining together the works of Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects and artist Alan Michelson and artists Kadambari Baxi and Irene Cheng.

"Land Ports of Entry" by Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects and artist Alan Michelson highlights the architecture of surveillance and openness in two border stations with the aim of facilitating the inspection and passenger control and vehicles crossing the bother between Unites States and Canada. The complexity of the project is to convey a sense of openness as well as security in a place that represents both a main ceremonial gateway and a site of surveillance and regulation. Aesthetics are presented through the use of material effects of transparency, translucency and opacity to help negotiate the contradictions of the program and to gesture towards the buildings’ equivocal, post-9/11 geopolitical landscape.
Together with "Land Port of Entry", the artists Kadambari Baxi and Irene Cheng present "Citizenship by Design", public art project that raises questions about citizenship in a globalized age through the study of artefacts such as passports, identification technologies and regulations regarding naturalization and travel. The project aims to call attention to the ways that citizenship is designed and how it might be re-imagined by highlighting the aesthetics of these objects and rules and remixing their graphic elements into multinational hybrids.

Both projects provoke viewers to reconsider the aesthetic dimensions of how nation-states regulate individuals’ movements and identities.
