Winners of the Italian Architecture Prize announced

Now in its fifth edition, the initiative promoted by MAXXI and Triennale Milano has announced this year's winners. Find out who they are.

Once again, MAXXI and Triennale Milano have chosen the winners of the Italian Architecture Prize, which alternates between Rome and Milan. For the fifth edition, the museum designed by Zaha Hadid hosted the awards ceremony, which took place on Thursday 13 June.

Three prizes were awarded: the award for the best building or intervention completed in the last three years by an Italian designer or studio based in Italy, the under 35 award and the lifetime achievement award.

The first prize (Best Building Award) went to Pietro Martino Federico Pizzi - Studio Pizzi, for the Ceresé Winery project, which we have previously discussed here. The Studio Pizzi project is located in a natural park, on a hillside in the Curone Valley, in the province of Lecco. A thin roof with a large circular opening in the centre, a monumental spiral staircase and a careful choice of pink tones are the defining elements of the project.

The Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Pierluigi Nicolin, architect, professor and researcher. One of the winners of the international competition for the new headquarters of the University of Calabria (1972) in Cosenza, and a founding member of Gregotti Associati, Nicolin was also awarded the Triennale's Gold Medal for Italian Architecture in 2003.

Finally, the group Grazzini Tonazzini Colombo won the Under 35 Award with the installation Quintessenza, which had already won NXT 2024, an initiative that allows young designers to compete with a project set up in MAXXI Square, open to visitors throughout the summer. The exhibition at the MAXXI Architecture Archive Centre, which includes all the winning and nominated projects, will be open until 29 September 2024.
