Third Wave Kiosk

The kiosk by Tony Hobba Architects, realised with recycled sheet piles, provides an important landmark, meeting point and services for the local community.

The brief was to design a new public facility at Torquay Surf Beach that contained a kiosk, toilets and change rooms; would be open year round; offer service community, recreation and tourist requirements; and provide an important beach side destination.

Being located on sensitive coastal land in a truly privileged setting that is very unique and highly sought after, the main design challenges for the kiosk project were to capture the essence of the site and provide an authentic experience which respected its environmental setting; engaged with beach culture; be resilient to the omnipresent weather and public misuse; and was modest and simple in design and construction.

Aside from the provision of food and coffee, the kiosk has grown into a local hang out, meeting point and destination in itself. It is robust and uncompromising in its resilience to an unforgiving environment, yet sensitively sited to respect it place within its coastal setting. By utilising the humble sheet pile as the Container for the foundation of the project, the kiosk is restrained in its materiality and is paired back to its essence.

The project was selected for the fifth edition of the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards.
