Berlin Autofrei, this is the name of the initiative which saw already the participation of approximately 50,000 resident people and has the aim to create a huge restricted traffic zone into the capital’s center. The proposal provides for closing to traffic the area bordered by the Ringbahn – the characteristic circular railway surrounding Berlin – spanning roughly 88 square meters.

Thought to reduce air polluting emissions and reduce accidents caused by cars, “Berlin Autofrei” is an extremely ambitious plan.

With this proposal Berliners not only want to commit themself to a sensible reduction in its private car’s polluting emissions, but also want to enhance the safety of their urban space – in 2020, in fact, about three-quarters of traffic-related deads in Berlin were composed by pedestrians and bikers.
If the initiative turns into a law, the one in Berlin will be the widest car-free area of the world.
